Range & Target Activities

RATA Summary

The purpose of Range & Target activities in Scouting is to teach respect and safety while introducing youth to a variety of fun, interactive program experiences. Scouting’s Range & Target activities are developed and implemented through age-appropriate training and experiences.

Chief Seattle Council adheres to the longstanding policy of teaching its youth and adult members the safe, responsible, and intelligent handling, care, and use of firearms, archery, and hand-held throwing sports in planned, carefully managed, and supervised programs for each youth who chooses to participate.

Safety is of the upmost importance in Scouting, and we truly appreciate the commitment to youth each and every volunteer in Chief Seattle Council has. If you have any questions, please contact the council office.

Frequently asked questions:

Can cubs attend? Cubs may attend events designated especially for their age group. The Scouts BSA RATA Days are open to Scout Troops, Sea Scout Ships, and Venturing Crews.

What firearms? Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzle Loading Rifles, and Archery.  Venturing Scouts can shoot pistols; however, these require the additional Hold Harmless Agreement

Can I bring my own firearm? No, all firearms are provided by the camp and shooting sports team for all events.

Can my scout earn a merit badge? Scouts should look for events specifically designed to obtain merit badges. A Scout may choose to bring their own blue card and get parts of their badge signed off. However, they are responsible for this and it is unlikely that they will be able to complete it during this event.
